Memphis Streetwear: The Story Behind Ugly Society

Ugly Society is an independent streetwear brand from West Memphis, Arkansas, the city just across the Mississippi River from Memphis. It has no big backers and no outside playbook. It was started by Soryn, a stay-at-home father building his own clothing business, and it is still run that way: every order is packed by hand, at home, and shipped straight to the customer. This post covers where the brand comes from, what the details on the clothes mean and how the drops work.

Where the name and the look come from

The brand grew out of the culture around Soryn and the people he came up with in the 870 area code. That background shows up directly on the garments rather than in a mood board. You will see the West Memphis 40 interstate shield, "West Memphis Made" and "4 Keeps Played" printed on the chest, "Make It Out Alive" across the shoulders and the year 1993 on the back of several pieces. None of these were picked from a trend report. They refer to the place and the people the brand comes from.

If you want the pieces that carry the city most directly, start with the West Memphis Streetwear collection. It includes the West Memphis Hoodie, a distressed black hoodie with the Ugly Society arch print and a Challenger car graphic; the slate blue Always Beefing Hoodie with its red and blue 40 shield; and the 4 Keeps Played Tee, which reads "Make It Out Alive" on the back.

Why 1993 keeps showing up

1993 is where the story starts, and the year works as a signature across the lineup. The Leopard Star Zip Hoodie has "Ugly Society 1993" across the back, the studded Ride The 9 Zip Hoodie carries a red "Ride The 9 1993" print, and the Opp Pack 93 Backpack puts the number on its lettering and shoulder strap. The 1993 Collection is built around that idea.

What Ugly Society makes

The core of the lineup is heavyweight and zip hoodies, wide-leg sweatpants and graphic tees, with accessories like the backpack added along the way. A few details repeat across the range:

  • Distressed and washed finishes. Many hoodies and tees are faded and broken in, so they look worn from the first day.
  • Wide-leg sweatpants with rhinestone hems. Styles include the Angel Wing, Bone Wing, Free My Opps Leg and Free My Opps 762 sweatpants, offered in colors such as purple, brown, gray and black.
  • The leopard oval star. A recurring graphic that anchors the Leopard Collection, including the zip hoodie and the Leopard Star Sweatpants, which come in leopard and cow print.

If you are shopping specifically for hoodies, the Memphis Streetwear Hoodies collection groups them in one place.

How the drops work

Ugly Society releases clothing in limited drops made in small runs. When a drop is gone, it is gone, and the next one picks up where the last left off. Keeping runs small keeps each piece personal and means the people who wear it are a real part of the society. It also means some items sell out quickly; several pieces from the current lineup are already sold out in some sizes or colors.

The most recent release is the Halloween 2026 Limited Drop. Alongside the core hoodies, sweats and tees, it adds seasonal graphics: the washed charcoal Soc13ty Pumpkin Hoodie with a jack-o-lantern mask face and a green 13, the distressed Soc13ty Nightmare Tee and the Soc13ty Halloween 26' Tee, marked "Limited Edition" on the back.

Who it is for

Ugly Society is not trying to look like anybody else. It is made for people who represent where they are from, wear what they believe and do not wait for permission. Whether you are from West Memphis, Memphis or anywhere else, the clothes are meant to be worn hard and worn proudly.
